2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class: Details and pics aplenty

01 cl 630 2011 Mercedes Benz CL Class: Details and pics aplenty
Meet the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class. The Silver Arrow has been kind enough to dish the goods on next year’s version of the company’s flagship coupe and even threw in a passel of photos to boot. So what’s new? For starters, the CL550 4MATIC now packs an all-new twin-turbo 4.7-liter V8 engine with around 429 horsepower and a beefy 516 lb-ft of torque. The keen-eyed among you will notice that the eight-pot is down in displacement by almost a full liter, but still manages to crank out 47 more horsepower and a massive 125 lb-ft of torque compared to last year’s powerplant. Isn’t progress great?
All of that extra grunt means the CL550 4MATIC can scoot to 60 mph in a scant 4.9 seconds, but that’s nothing compared to the big-boy CL600. The range-topping coupe can click off the dash to 60 mph in a mere 4.5-seconds – that’s within spitting distance of a base Chevrolet Corvette. If you’re trying to wrap your brain around how a 4,900-pound two-door can manage to bend the laws of nature, look no further than the 510 horsepower, 612 lb-ft of torque 5.5-liter V12 lurking beneath the sheetmetal. Yeah, that’ll do. Hit the jump for the full press release, and sit tight for live photos from the car’s debut at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class makes live debut in England

lead1mbclclass2011live 2011 Mercedes Benz CL Class makes live debut in England
Mercedes-Benz released the initial photos and information on the 2011 CL-Class earlier today, showing off its updated luxury coupe. We were at the unveiling at the Mercedes-Benz World across from the historic Brooklands racetrack, and now have some live photos to bring you.
The big news for the 2011 CL is the updated engine offerings, which include the new twin-turbo 4.6-liter V8 producing 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet torque in the CL550 model that also offers improved fuel efficiency. The 0-60 mph time has also been cut by half a second. The CL600 (pictured) is also still available, powered by a 510 horsepower, 612 lb-ft torque twin-turbo V12.
Additional upgrades to the CL include new safety technologies including Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Adaptive High Beam Assist, Night View Assist and more. The Mercedes-Benz COMAND system comes standard, featuring USB and SD card interfaces mated to a 7.2 GB hard drive.
You can view the new 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class in detail, both inside and out, in the high-res gallery below, or follow the jump to read all of the details in the official press release.

Report: Dodge originally developed SLS AMG to be next-gen Viper

02mbsls63amgfd 630op Report: Dodge originally developed SLS AMG to be next gen Viper
There’s a lot to like about the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. After all, we’re talking about a sleek, 563-horsepower super-Benz with functional gullwing doors and a soundtrack to melt your heart. It’s the embodiment of German engineering… or is it? Inside Line cites unnamed sources who say that the SLS AMG actually began life as the next-generation Dodge Viper.
The story apparently goes like this. Dodge engineers were already hard at work on the next-gen Viper, with an aluminum chassis already completed and a new suspension on the way. Mercedes caught wind of the project and decided that the chassis would be the perfect starting point for the upcoming SLS. The two teams reportedly worked side-by-side on the project until Chrysler’s cash crunch caused the Dodge team to focus its resources elsewhere. The end result was a brand-new SLS for Mercedes and a hole in Dodge’s Viper lineup. IL bolsters its account of the Viper-turned-SLS with the fact that early SLS test mules caught by spy photogs were fitted with ill-assembled Viper sheetmetal.
While it’s hard to blame Mercedes for utilizing existing engineering work (it did, after all own Chrysler at the time) to bring the SLS to market faster and cheaper, we’re thinking it would have been nice to have a new aluminum chassis Viper on the streets. Here’s hoping that the 2012 Viper makes us forget about our loss.

First Drive: 2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class is better by a nose

lead1mercedesrclassfd2011 First Drive: 2011 Mercedes Benz R Class is better by a nose
Not too long ago, there was a time when all of the vehicles in an automaker’s portfolio weren’t required to wear the same uniform. Each model could be its own unique expression of the brand’s strengths without being forced to schedule an appointment with the corporate plastic surgeon. Granted, some marques lost a bit of identity with scads of mismatched children running around the lot, but the world’s automotive variety pack was considerably more interesting. If you didn’t like the face on one product, but wanted to stick with the brand, there were a plethora of options to choose from.
That’s not the case anymore. We live in a world of increasingly unified automotive design, and while that’s resulted in a few products missing the mark in a big way (we’re looking at you, Acura), just as many manufacturers have created some real winners by spreading the corporate face among its progeny. Dodge’sdecision to share the Ram grille across its line was one of the best moves the company has made in recent history, and Ford and Chevrolet have similarly benefited from strong familial design cues.
Now Mercedes-Benz is looking to walk down the same path by spreading its upright grille to the 2011 R-Class. The move isn’t so much of a shot in the arm as a shot of espresso for the Silver Arrow’s awkward duckling, but it should help the luxury people mover blend in amongst its more beautiful brethren.

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class people-mover gets a fresh new exterior for the 2011 model year. Not only does it incorporate the automaker’s new corporate face, with the dinner-plate-sized logo in the middle of the grille, but the rear end has been smoothed out and the whole package looks a lot sleeker (as sleek as an R-Class can be, anyway). In all, we like the refreshed appearance, as it really tones down the bulgy proportions of the big R, and if you’re shelling out top dollar for a family hauler, you’ll certainly want to look your best while cruising to Costco.
Not much has changed underhood – Mercedes-Benz is still offering the naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V6 as well as the well-received 3.5-liter Bluetec turbodiesel. The interior gets a mild freshening, as well, and we must say, it looks like a wonderful place for long-distance cruises. Report: Mercedes-Benz CLC hatchback is toast

mercedesclcclass027 Report: Mercedes Benz CLC hatchback is toast
Things aren’t looking good for the CLC, Mercedes-Benz’s small hatchback based on the last-generation (W203) C-Class platform. When the current-generation CLC was introduced in 2008, it never came to North America, mostly due to the underwhelming sales numbers that the original C-Class Sport Coupé garnered while in production. These cars have been moderately popular in other markets, but new reports state that the CLC production will come to an halt at the end of this year.
Currently, the CLC is produced at Benz’s Juiz de Fora facility in Brazil, which will be undergoing changes in its production line. This plant will be repurposed to build the Actros, Mercedes’ heavy-duty commercial truck, and no plans have been made to shift CLC production elsewhere. Reports suggest that we could see an all-new version of the CLC when the next-generation C-Class drops in a couple of years (probably not slated for the States, of course), but until we get the official word from Mercedes-Benz, we wish the little hatch a fond farewell. Top tip, Rodrigo!

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG available in Alubeam – If you have patience

10c276013 Mercedes Benz SLS AMG available in Alubeam If you have patience
If you’re shopping for a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG finished in Alubeam silver here in the United States, you’re in luck, but you’ll have to be patient. A reader dropped us a note to let us know that a Dallas, Texas dealer apparently informed a friend of his that Alubeam had not been released for the American market yet.
We checked with Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman Rob Moran, who tells us that the special finish is indeed available. Alubeam first appeared on the 40th anniversary CL65 AMG several years ago. If you haven’t seen it, Alubeam is a stunning metallic finish that looks like molten silver.
According to Moran, the Alubeam bodies are hand-painted at Mercedes-Benz’s Sindelfingen factory, while other colors are applied at a Magna Steyr body shop. The more labor intensive process means that only about 2-3 cars a week are available for U.S. market allocation. Hopefully the customer and dealer are just having a miscommunication about the longer wait time, because the special paint is definitely available. A tip of the hat to Ross!

Review: Mercedes-Benz GLK350 4Matic is more than just a movie prop

lead1mbglk350review2010 Review: 2010 Mercedes Benz GLK350 4Matic is more than just a movie prop
When you launch a vehicle during the year’s most over-hyped estrogenfest, you’re obviously trying to appeal to a specific demographic. Specifically, not us. There’s a reason we haven’t taken a crack at the Mercedes-Benz GLK until the sequel to Sex and the City hit the screen. It was just too easy to pigeonhole this cute ‘ute as nothing more than a boxy four-wheeled trinket – a cynical fashion accessory designed to compliment your rat-faced pooch and Manolo Blahniks (yes, we had to look that up).
But a funny thing happened on the way down I-5.
While blasting the stereo and hauling along at a decidedly Germanic clip, all of the stereotypes about the GLK’s target demographic flew out its expansive sunroof. For as much as we dislike the mere idea of “entry-level luxury” – and in particular the scads of pseudo-SUVs that populate it – the GLK started to make sense. It’s well proportioned, has adequate power and comes with nearly enough amenities to match its tri-pointed badge. We actually enjoyed it, even though our manhood might’ve taken a hit in the process.

Apple iPad to be used as sales tool by Mercedes-Benz dealers

mb ipad Apple iPad to be used as sales tool by Mercedes Benz dealers
The resounding successes of the iPhone and iPad have Apple shareholders dancing in the streets, but one area in which Apple hasn’t been as successful, however, has been business applications. In fact, until recently, Apple retail stores used Windows-based devices to ring up orders. Now, Mercedes-Benz aims to be among the first companies to change that paradigm by bringing the popular iPad tablet into its showrooms.
The program, called Mercedes-Benz Advantage, puts the iPad into the hands of the automaker’s sales force. With the iPad and Mercedes’ new sales tool app, associates will have lightning-fast access to the latest deals, while also providing a quicker turnaround time for customer credit application processes. Benz also says the iPad will help speed up the time it takes to turn-in a leased vehicle. Andreas Hinrichs, Vice President of Marketing for Mercedes-Benz Financial, contends the Apple tablet will “provide a competitive advantage to our dealers by increasing their service levels through a more flexible financing process.”
We dig that Mercedes is thinking outside the box to deliver an expedited shopping experience, but even better, we love the fact that the Apple iPad might help customers avoid the dreaded trip to dealership’s finance room. Hit the jump to read over the press release.

Following BMW, Daimler announces carbon fiber future ahead for Mercedes

01 mbsls63amgfd opt Following BMW, Daimler announces carbon fiber future ahead for Mercedes
It seem like just a few days ago BMW came forth stating that its use of carbon fiber on upcoming vehicles would become a high-volume deal. Now Green Car Advisor reports that Daimler, never willing to be a step behind, has also announced plans to increase its investment in the material. Daimler has enlisted the help of Toray Industries, a Japanese textile company, to help make carbon fiber body parts for Mercedes-Benzvehicles beginning in 2012. The parts will reduce vehicle weight and help the company meet upcoming CAFE regulations. The first Mercedes product to be adorned with carbon fiber will be the SL-Class.
Daimler choose Toray Industries due to its expertise in carbon fiber. Though not a common name to many, Toray is actually the dominant force in the industry, controlling 34 percent of the global market. This will be Toray’s first venture into making car parts out of carbon fiber. The company’s current automotive-related experiences with the material has been limited to supplying carbon fiber yarns to Ferrari and various aftermarket companies. Daimler and Toray will work together on development of the carbon fiber reinforced plastic body parts and production will be carried out at a Toray facility in France.

New Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible in Depth, Plus 55 High-Res Photos

For those of you that fancy a topless E-Class, Mercedes-Benz has revealed a convertible version of the coupe that will make its world premiere at next month’s Detroit auto show. The fourth member of the E-Class family, which essentially replaces the CLK Cabriolet, features a classic fabric soft top can be opened and closed fully automatically within 20 seconds at speeds up to 40km/h or 25mph.

Mercedes says that E-Class Convertible’s boot capacity with the roof open is 300 liters (13.5 cu.ft.) , raising to 390 liters (13.8 cu.ft.) when closed.
The most significant new feature for the four-seater cabriolet is the AIRCAP system that consists of two components, a wind deflector on top of the windscreen that can be extended by around six centimetres or 2.5 inches and a draught-stop between the rear seats.

As well as reducing wind turbulence in the cabin, Mercedes says that the system also reduces the interior noise level. The AIRCAP can be activated at speeds of up to 160 km/h and remains in use right up to the car’s top speed.

Other highlights include the redesigned AIRSCARF system that is integrated into the backrests of the front seats and provides warm air through outlets in the head restraints.
All E-Class Convertible models are equipped with seven airbags fitted as standard and a roll-over protection system that consists of two bars, each with a diameter of 35 mm, which are housed in the rear head restraints in modules behind the rear seat backrests.
At least in Europe, there are plenty of direct-injection engines to choose from, ranging from a 204HP four-cylinder diesel (to be followed shortly after launch by a 170HP E220 CDI model) to a 388HP V8 petrol. Here’s the complete range:
E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet (diesel): 150 kW/204 hp
E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet (diesel): 170 kW/231 hp
E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet (petrol): 150 kW/204 hp
E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet (petrol): 215 kW/292 hp
E 500 Cabriolet (petrol): 285 kW/388 hp
In North America, the new E-Class Convertible will be offered only with the 292HP 3.5-liter V6 (E350 CGI) and the 388HP 5.5-liter V8 (E500).

Mercedes said that the four-seater cabrio will go on sale in March 2010.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible Officially Revealed

2010 Mercedes Benz E Class Convertible 0 2010 Mercedes Benz E Class Convertible Officially Revealed

Mercedes-Benz is completing the E-Class family with the introduction of a convertible model that will replace the outgoing CLK drop top and compete with the BMW 3-Series and Audi A5 cabriolets.

While the Stuttgart automaker has yet to publish an official (English) press release, the company has issued several official photos of the four-seater convertible that will be launched in March 2010.
Based on the new E-Class Coupe, the convertible version gets an electrically operated fabric roof instead of a retractable hardtop while other changes over its tin-top sibling include the redesigned rear wings and trunk lid.

One of the unique features of the 2010 E-Class Convertible is an ground-breaking retractable wind spoiler located on top of the front windshield. Called ‘Aircap’, the system works in conjunction with a rear deflector to helps to direct wind over the passenger compartment.

Not surprisingly, the drop-top E-Class shares the same technology under the skin with the Coupe model with the initial engine lineup in Europe comprising of three diesel and four petrol units.
The diesel range includes the 170HP E220 CDI, the 204HP 250 CDI and 231HP E350 CDI while the petrol lineup, the 184HP E200 CGI, the 204HP E250 CGI, the 292HP E350 CGI and the top-of-the line E 500 with a 388HP V8 engine.
More details are expected to be released shortly, so stay tuned on Carscoop as we’ll bring you the news as it comes in.

Mercedes-Benz Debuts SLS AMG Desert Gold at Dubai Show

Mercedes SLS AMG Desert Gold 0 Mercedes Benz Debuts SLS AMG Desert Gold at Dubai Show

As the age old saying goes, when in Rome do as the Romans do. Not to stereotype, but you have to admit that the United Arab Emirates have had their fare share of gold-finished exotic supercars and as such, Mercedes-Benz decided to show off a special SLS AMG Gullwing with the designation “AMG Desert Gold” with a matt gold color at the bi-annual Dubai Motor Show that runs from December 15 to 20.

In addition to matt gold paintwork, all the decorative and mounted features like the Mercedes star at the front and the fins on the bonnet and flanks that are in shining chrome or Silver Shadow in the standard SLS AMG have been given a deep-black paint finish on the show car.

The same goes for the black-painted AMG light-alloy wheels in size 9.5 x 19 at the front and 11.0 x 20 at the rear that are embellished with a golden ring on the rim flange.

Mercedes chose to leave the interior of the 571HP gullwing-supercar intact, opting for black leather and carbon fiber trim.
The Stuttgart automaker noted that while the AMG Desert Gold treatment has been used only for the display vehicle at the Dubai show, if there’s enough interest generated, the special gold paint finish could become available as an individual optional extra from the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO.
And if not, we’re pretty sure that those SLS AMG owners that find the gold finish alluring will find a way to do it anyway…
